VLT is not the same as heat rejection
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) tells you how dark a film looks. It says almost nothing about how much heat it blocks. A 5% VLT dyed "limo tint" film can actually reject less infrared heat than a 70% VLT ceramic film, because heat rejection is determined by the film's material composition — not its shade (EuroLuxe Detailing). This is the single biggest misconception first-time tint buyers have, and it's why "go darker for more heat rejection" is bad advice with dyed film.
Ceramic vs. dyed vs. carbon: the numbers
The two specs that actually matter are TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejected) and IRR (Infrared Rejection) at the 900–1000nm wavelength range where the sun does most of its damage:
- Dyed film: TSER 15–30%, IRR roughly 20–40%, fades within 3–5 years as the dye layer breaks down (TintLaws 2026 Buyer's Guide)
- Carbon film: TSER 35–50%, better longevity than dyed, no signal interference, but still well below ceramic performance
- Ceramic / nano-ceramic film (what we sell): TSER 45–65%, IRR 60–80% at peak infrared wavelengths, UV rejection above 99%, and none of the metallic content that can interfere with GPS, toll tags, or cell signal (EuroLuxe Detailing, TintLaws)
Independent heat testing backs this up: a 35% VLT ceramic film has been measured rejecting as much cabin heat as a 20% VLT dyed film — while letting in nearly twice the visible light (Auto Cosmetics Ceramic Tint Guide). That means you can stay lighter, stay street-legal on your front windows, and still run cooler than someone who went dark with dyed film.
