Window Tint Laws by State
Before you install: Every U.S. state sets its own legal Visible Light Transmission (VLT) limits for window tint. VLT is the percentage of light that passes through the film — a lower number means a darker tint. HMU4TINT kits are available in 70%, 50%, 35%, 20%, 15%, and 5% VLT so you can match your state's law exactly.

How to choose the right VLT for your state
- Match or go lighter than the limit. If your state allows 35% on front sides, choose 35% or 50% — not 20%.
- Rear windows can usually go darker. Most states let you tint back and rear glass to any darkness. Popular choice: 20% or 15%.
- Windshield strip. A 5–6in strip across the top of the windshield is legal in most states. HMU4TINT includes a precut windshield strip in most kits.
- Ceramic vs dyed. Officers measure VLT, not film type. HMU4TINT ceramic in 35% passes the same light as cheap dyed 35% — but rejects up to 88% more infrared heat and blocks 99% of UV.

What is VLT? Visible Light Transmission — the % of light that passes through the film. 5% = very dark limo. 70% = nearly clear.
What does "Above AS-1" mean for windshields? AS-1 is a manufacturer line etched near the top of your windshield. Tint above that line is legal in most states.
Do medical exemptions exist? Yes — most states offer them for photosensitivity, lupus, and other conditions. Check your state DMV.
Will HMU4TINT ceramic pass state inspection? Yes, when installed at a legal VLT for your state. Our film is non-metallic and doesn't interfere with sensors, transponders, or ADAS.
